Major General Nicholas Welch OBE is an Army Officer who serves as the Chief of Staff of the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps. ==Military career== Welch was commissioned into the Gloucestershire Regiment in 1984. During the 1980s he served in various regimental appointments in the UK, Berlin, Northern Ireland and Belize. Subsequently he served; on the Mozambique Training Team in Zimbabwe; as an advisor to the Jamaican Defence Force, and with the NI Training and Advisory Team. At staff he was ADC to GOC NI and Assistant MA to the Deputy SACEUR. He attended the Army Staff Course in Camberley in 1993 and was then appointed Military Assistant 2 to the Chief of the General Staff. He commanded an air assault infantry company in UK, the Balkans and Northern Ireland; he was an instructor at the Land Warfare Centre, Command and Staff Trainer and then served as the Military Assistant to the Force Commander of the UN Mission in the Congo. Prior to regimental command he was directing staff at the Advanced Command and Staff Course at Shrivenham. In 2002 he took command of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment operating in London, Northern Ireland, Kosovo and Afghanistan. He was promoted to Colonel in 2005 and served as the Colonel General Staff before taking command of 7 Armoured Brigade based in Bergen Hohne, Germany. In 2011 he deployed with 2nd US Marine Expeditionary Force as the deputy commander of Regional Command (South West) in Afghanistan. In 2012 he was briefly Deputy Director of Strategic Studies in the Ministry of Defence before assuming the appointment of Director Army Division, at the Joint Service Command and Staff College. Having run the UK Higher Command and Staff Course in July 2014 he assumed the appointment of Chief of Staff, NATO Allied Rapid Reaction Corps Welch was awarded a Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service for service in the former Yugoslavia and again for service in Afghanistan in 2010.
